La Pedrera

I had been anticipating a visit to la Casa Milà, or la Pedrera, on Passeig de Gràcia before even arriving in Barcelona, mainly because I’d finally get to see a Gaudí building in person!

And I was not at all disappointed!  How could I be?  The undulations, the kelpy balconies, the lack of straight lines!  I can only imagine how odd this building would have looked to the people of Barcelona at its completion in 1912.  In fact, the Milà family, who commissioned Gaudí to build this for him (giving him full discretion, mind you), absolutely hated it when it was finally revealed and refused to live there.  ¡Qué lástima!

Not one to leave any stone unturned, Gaudí’s intricate designs extend through every floor of the building, and even onto the roof!  And I really do love any opportunity to spy on the neighbors…
